Twelve Things Worth Your Sunday
Small pleasures, long walks and one excellent sandwich — a list for a slower weekend.
No essay this week. Instead, a list of small things that have made our Sundays better. Steal freely.
- Walk a route you have only ever driven. You will discover a street you have passed a hundred times and never seen.
- Learn the name of one tree on your street. Then you will see it everywhere.
- Eat lunch at a counter, facing the kitchen. It is the best seat in any restaurant.
- Visit a museum for twenty minutes. Look at one room only. Leave before you are tired.
- Write a postcard to someone in your own city.
- Go to the market at closing time, when the bargains are best and the vendors are chatty.
- Read the noticeboard at your local library. Every neighbourhood’s secret life is pinned there.
- Find the oldest building on your block and look up when it was built.
- Sit in a park without your phone for the length of one song you can hum.
- Make the excellent sandwich: good bread, salted butter, a tomato at its peak. Nothing else.
- Take the long way to the bakery.
- Plan nothing for the evening. Let the city make a suggestion.
